Gowning - The Garment and the Technique Are Both the Control

Gowning is the specific procedure of donning protective clothing appropriate to a classified area, and it is only as effective as both the garment specification and the technique used to put it on. EU GMP Annex 1 2022 substantially expanded its expectations around gowning in the 2022 revision, treating garment selection, laundering or sterilization validation, donning sequence, and qualification as interconnected elements of a single control rather than separate checklist items. A correctly specified garment donned with poor technique, or excellent technique applied to a compromised garment, both fail to deliver the intended contamination control.

Reusable Sterilized Garments

Garments laundered and re-sterilized through a validated cycle for repeated use, requiring documented cycle validation and use-life tracking.

Requires: Laundry/sterilization validation

Single-Use Sterile Garments

Garments used once and discarded, eliminating laundering cycle variability but requiring rigorous incoming sterility assurance from the supplier.

Requires: Supplier sterility assurance

Non-Sterile Support Garments

Lower classification garments for Grade C and D areas, still low-linting and appropriate to the area but without sterile processing requirements.

Typical use: Grade C/D support areas

Critical Component Classification

Garment components, such as sterile gloves and face masks in Grade A/B, classified as critical given their direct proximity to open product exposure.

Basis: Proximity to product exposure
Phase 1
Garment Selection and Management
1Select garment material appropriate to classification
Low-linting, appropriately filtering garment material selected matching the specific classification level and operation the garment will support.
EU GMP Annex 1 2022
↓
2Validate laundering and sterilization cycles
For reusable garments, laundering and sterilization cycles validated to confirm consistent particle and microbial removal without degrading garment integrity.
EU GMP Annex 1 2022
↓
3Define garment use-life and replacement criteria
Maximum number of laundering and sterilization cycles, or single-use garment shelf life, defined and tracked to prevent use beyond validated limits.
EU GMP Annex 1 2022
↓
4Implement garment storage and handling controls
Sterilized or single-use garments stored and handled in a manner preventing contamination or packaging integrity loss before use.
ISO 14644-5
Phase 2
Gowning Sequence and Technique
5Perform pre-gowning hygiene
Hand washing, removal of jewelry and cosmetics, and a basic health status check performed before gowning begins.
21 CFR 211.28
↓
6Don garments in validated sequence
Garments donned in the specific validated order, using technique that avoids self-contact contamination of the garment's outer, sterile-facing surfaces.
EU GMP Annex 1 2022
↓
7Apply aseptic technique for critical components
Sterile gloves and mask donned using aseptic technique in Grade A/B areas, ensuring no contact contamination of surfaces that will face the classified environment.
EU GMP Annex 1 2022
↓
Does gowning technique meet the qualification standard?
YES → Proceed to area entry NO → Retrain and requalify
Phase 3
Gowning Qualification Programme
8Conduct initial gowning qualification
Initial qualification requires multiple consecutive successful gownings, assessed through both visual observation and microbial sampling of the completed gown.
EU GMP Annex 1 2022
↓
9Establish periodic requalification frequency
Requalification frequency defined based on classification level, with higher classification areas requiring more frequent reassessment.
EU GMP Annex 1 2022
↓
10Maintain individual qualification records
Complete gowning qualification history maintained per individual, supporting trend review and providing clear evidence of current qualification status.
21 CFR 211.28
Phase 4
Ongoing Monitoring and Garment Lifecycle
11Perform routine gown monitoring during production
Surface sampling of gowned personnel performed during actual production activity, not only during a separate qualification exercise.
EU GMP Annex 1 2022
↓
12Track garment integrity and remove damaged garments
Garments inspected for tears, wear, or seam failure, with any compromised garment immediately removed from service regardless of remaining use-life cycles.
ISO 14644-5
↓
13Trend gowning excursions by individual and batch
Gowning-related monitoring excursions trended both by individual and by garment lot or laundering batch, surfacing a pattern that a single event would not reveal.

Garment Specification Requirements

Particle and Fiber Shedding

Garment fabric tested and specified for low particle and fiber shedding appropriate to the classification level it will be used in.

ISO 14644-5

Full Body Coverage at Grade A/B

Grade A and B gowning designed to leave no exposed skin, with full coverage of hair, face, hands, and feet.

EU GMP Annex 1 2022

Sterility Assurance for Critical Garments

Garments used in Grade A/B areas sterilized through a validated process or supplied with documented sterility assurance from a qualified vendor.

EU GMP Annex 1 2022

Gowning Technique Failure Response Steps

Step 1 - Do not enter the classified area Stop before area entry the moment a gowning technique failure is identified during the self-check or observer review.
Step 2 - Remove and replace the compromised garment Fully remove the affected garment and begin gowning again from an appropriate point in the sequence, using a fresh garment.
Step 3 - Document the specific failure mode Record precisely what went wrong, whether contact contamination, incorrect sequence, or a garment integrity issue.
Step 4 - Assess pattern against individual qualification history Review whether this is an isolated event or part of a developing pattern for the specific individual.
Step 5 - Retrain and requalify before further unsupervised gowning Provide targeted retraining addressing the specific failure mode, followed by a fresh qualification assessment before the individual gowns unsupervised again.

Qualification Frequency Requirements

Initial qualification rigor Multiple consecutive successful gownings required for initial qualification, not a single successful demonstration.
Grade-scaled requalification interval Requalification frequency scaled to classification level, with Grade A/B areas requiring more frequent reassessment than Grade C/D support areas.
Trigger-based requalification Requalification also triggered by extended absence from an area, a documented gowning failure, or a change in garment specification.
Documented pass/fail criteria Visual and microbial acceptance criteria for gowning qualification documented in advance, applied consistently across all individuals.

Garment Lifecycle Management Elements

Sterilization Cycle Validation Validated sterilization cycle confirming consistent achievement of the required sterility assurance level for reusable garments.
Use-Life Tracking System tracking the number of laundering or sterilization cycles each reusable garment has undergone against its validated maximum.
Integrity Inspection Programme Routine inspection process identifying tears, thinning fabric, or seam failure before a compromised garment is returned to service.
Laundry Facility Qualification External or internal laundry facility qualified and periodically audited to confirm continued adherence to the validated laundering process.
Single-Use Garment Disposal Defined disposal process for single-use garments preventing any inadvertent reuse or mix-up with garments still in active service.
Storage Condition Control Garment storage areas controlled for temperature, humidity, and cleanliness appropriate to maintaining garment and packaging integrity.
Garment Inventory and Reconciliation Inventory tracking ensuring an adequate supply of qualified garments is available without relying on out-of-cycle or unvalidated stock.
Vendor Qualification for Purchased Garments Garment suppliers, particularly for single-use sterile garments, qualified and periodically reassessed as part of the site's supplier management programme.

Never do this

Return a visibly damaged garment to service because its cycle count remains within the validated limit. Skip periodic gowning requalification once initial qualification is achieved. Apply the same donning sequence and rigor across all classification levels regardless of grade. Allow a gowning technique failure to go undocumented because the individual self-corrected before area entry.

Gowning vs personnel flow

Gowning is the specific procedure of donning the correct garments with correct technique. Personnel flow is the broader movement pathway through gowning stages, airlocks, and classified areas. Gowning technique quality and flow discipline are both necessary, but they address different points of potential failure.

Initial vs periodic qualification

Initial qualification establishes that an individual can perform correct gowning technique from a standing start. Periodic requalification confirms that technique has not quietly degraded over months of routine, largely unsupervised practice, which is a genuine and well-documented risk in mature gowning programmes.
