Plain-language explanation, inspection context and common violation patterns.
Regulation (EC) No 1234/2008 sets the framework for changing a marketing authorisation after it is granted. Changes are classified by their potential impact on quality, safety and efficacy. Minor changes are Type IA, notified after implementation, or Type IB, notified before implementation. Major changes are Type II and need approval before they can be implemented. Extensions of the authorisation are handled separately, and the framework also provides for grouping changes and for worksharing. Detailed classification is set out in the Commission guidelines on variations.
Paraphrased for plain-language clarity. Always verify against the current published regulation text.
A manufacturing change implemented before the required variation approval or notification had been obtained, or not assessed for regulatory impact at all.
